i actually drew this for drawing day just sadly didnt get it uploaded to the site because i had to dash off to work. ah well better luck next year. i had to pop the pencil on the page becacause the page wouldnt stay down... due to glue that propebly shouldnt be there -_-

i started this over a week ago and messed up so are redoing it. heres the line art. should be fun and i know where i'm going know and not to use that colour for the leaves.

will update soon with more work on it.

also i have been playing around in painter 12 especially the kalidiscope feature just for fun :D. i'm still getting used to the brushes and what but hopefully when i'm more familiar with it i will create some actual art :) some are worse then other however enjoy :D

i finished this a while ago... well i'm calling it finished. to many mistakes to want to keep going with it. its one of those pics where i'm actually thinking of redrawing it compleatly and fixing it. we shall see. anyway heres where i got up to before i scrapped it

on other news my comic is going fairly well. once i've got these 6 pages done i will have the first chapter fully planned and ready to go.

i'm also about to start a watercolour painting. just finishing the sketch off and i'm ready to go :)

learning light and shadow

you might have noticed that i've kinda been working in black and white or with a coloured texture over black and white recently. this is part of my plan to get better at light and shadows. so here are some studies of how light effect spherical objects. the first one is defiantly wrong. oh and just so you know no refs used. all done from saying oh the light source is here so it would look like this.

i also bought a tutorial video from gnomon workshop that is about the tonal female portrait to help me improve there. its been quite an enjoyable watch so far... though he needs to touch on the basics before diving right in. so you will hopefully see some portrait studies from me in the future.

digital scribblings

quick face study. i actually have 6 other face studies that are in progress however i'm using them to use limited colour pallets to colour them. will keep you updated. i'm still getting used to drawing in photoshop i am however enjoying it. this is also a rough for one of my comic panels :) though this one will change quite a bit as i want her in shadow so she's not as recognisable here :D this isnt the warden character. i need to build Leliana's face shape more right now its not looking much like her. luckily this is just a plan :D

done as a study. i tried to paint a panel for the comic i'm working on. things are still subject to change. i watched these videos about useing photoshop to create panels and what not and apparently elemts is missing some features there :/ so the panels are not how i would like them to look.

I have been playing around in photoshop and while it will never replace my paints completely I am having a lot of fun right now. photoshop was something that scared me. i felt compleatly lost when trying to use it. i own a copy of elements so its not the best lets leave it at that. tutorials don't match it for example and features are missing. I'm hoping to get CS5. the price for photo shop is always off putting. right now i cant afford it. I'm hoping to raise the funds somehow though. just need to make a plan of action for it :)

still debating of whether to do it digitally or traditionally. i'm actually leaning to a mixture of both. any who time for lunch.

i haven't a title for this one yet. i have been doing a lot of work for my comic recently. mainly paintings and planning for the warden character of the story and the script itself. i'm a little annoyed as i have to rewrite some of the chapters as there on the dead pc... that or buy one of those cases that i can put a hard drive in... that would probably be easier. we shall see. lots of work to do on this still. i hope to get it done buy the end of tomorrow. the background while simple was quite fun started off yellowish and has slowly shifted to greenish. i love working with lots of glazes.

before i finalise her design i'm gonna look into hair. think i could do a better job of hair in general. i liked my barbarin pic's hair quite alot. think i've lost that Art nuvor feeling. also i might actually ink the hair after i've painted it wont be as set then. something to experiment with. probably gonna work on lots of portraits as i need to work on faces and expressions and what not. i think i can do portraits for the next month and if i do them quite small (i'm planning on A6) i hopefully can get more done and improve more because of it. i will get better at drawing faces.

yes your eyes are not deceiving you i'm working on a digital painting. i wanted to try using the colour layer mode to paint. and originally i was gonna print it and copy it to watercolour paper that way but kinda got carried away. especially since i seem to be figuring stuff out about photoshop recently. i actually created a brush from a jpeg file today and feeling pretty pleased with myself. i've also figured out how to have 2 windows showing the same picture which is useful. she still needs work. its the warden character for my dragon age fan comic. still figuring stuff out and what not. i actually hope to start work on it soon :)

i actually have several chapters planned out already for it fully as well as bits and piece here and there for further in the story. i want it to look like watercolours. but here's the thing watercolour can be pretty slow. however i actually may have figured out a solution for it. paint the comic in grey scale watercolours and colour it digitally using layers set to colour etc. i need to research this a bit more though.

i'm also thinking of doing a name change from the defult wardens name neria to something else. i'm thinking Elida same flow so it will go with her surname and meaning small winged one which wardens symbol been a groffon and elves been smaller then humans is kinda fitting. not sure yet though.

first off my barbarian self portrait is compleated all that is left now is to play around with the colours in photoshop and a little bit of clean up. i'm hoping to get that done soon. i'll update once its done

so i went back to the mushroom glade painting. i'm hoping to see my sister next week if shes free. its good to have a deadline :) anywho i have actually been unhappy with this painting for a while. i think some of the changes i have made have improved it, the depth is better at the background foliage, and i still need to fix that depth in places

i'm not happy with the grass under the faeries feet so i am trying out this absorbent ground which acts as magical white out to hopefully fix the problem. we shall see. hopefully i will have an update for it soon :)

self portrait with a little bit of fantasy - colouring

some work has been done on this self portrait. hopping all over the place. the skind shadows need deppening in places but i'm gonna get the hair and fur finished next i think before revisiting the skin.

my camera isnt doing the best of jobs capturing the glazes and currently i dont have photoshop to make adjustments as my pc has died and cant use the other pc right now.

well a lot of fantasy but you get the picture. i spent the day transferring my slightly changed from the last post digital sketch to paper. i noticed my art has improved since i started drawing predominately digitally because of all the little tweaks i can make and how easy it is to do them.

i messed up in the inks a bit :( still geting used to my brush however because is brown in and i'm painting the fur brown (which is where i made my little mess up) it shouldn't be too noticeable. we shall see. if it is well i'll have learned from it.

i'm hopefully gonna start painting it tonight :)

i have been working on alot this month. some of which i cant currently talk about as it wouldnt be professional until its published.

but some stuff i can share is here. well some sketches anyway.

this was for a tutorial that i wanted to enter but didnt have time. its of the sword excalibar i'm thinking of moving the sword and adding a graveyard. but i'm thinking of finishing this soon :)

next up we have the beginnings of a self portrait. i wanted to get some crit before i startred painting it. firstly we have the photo i used for refrence. i know it has alot of shadows on it but i want to work on my light and shadow and its perfect for that.

next we have the pure sketch from refrence hopefulkly i've got the likeness.

next up we have made it more of a fantasy portrait using my face as the base for a female barbarian. there has been talk about going the vampire rout but wen i gave the sketch before i went in this direction pointy teeth i couldnt help chuckle or feel very silly. its a good i want to suck your blood pose... i think the hair still needs some work, and some removed from places :) no layers have been removed even those that arnt needed anymore so ignore the scribbly mess.

okay so the watercolours are done for this, unless i get some crit :)

originally i was gonna put some Knottwork in the background. i however changed my mind and are now planning of doing a mount for it with knot work on it and some pictures. like the mounts stephannie pui mun law does. my good friend phonicorn suggested i sghould mount my work and since this isnt the biggest piece i've done i figured i might has well get some practice. i have cut my windows out for the picture and realised that i need to get one of those slighnted mount cutters for the future. especially since i plan on mounting all mu origanals when i eventually sell them.

anywho i plan on dong something simular but not quite this on the mount for my Hiccup piece. lets see if it works :)

hiccup - hair in progress

more progress on my hiccup picture. it doesnt look like i've done much however his hair is taking alot of work. and is still not finished. it needs dulling in places and brown pushed in to the red along with some more shadows but its beginning to get there. i've also washed a mixture of sap green, cerulean blue and paynes grey over his clothes to knock the brightness back of the bright green. its still we so its reflective in places.

so skin and hair are beginning to take shape now. masking fluid has been removed and the base eye colour added... there errr very bright right now, they will be darker green eventually. this pen actually withstands masking fluid very well my technical drawing pens lift way to easy.

his hair is in the bases right now, raw umber, burnt umber and a few mixtures will be used to knock out the red as hiccup has more brownish hair with a redish ting then red hair. skin still needs fixing in places but hair and background will be finished first before i revisit it due to skin been easyer to do last for me... well the base comes early on but finishing the skin happens late on in the painting. have yet to knock the bright green out his top.

more update on this. i think the green needs dulling... pale blue grey wash is proberbly the solution andthe fur still needs some shadows and what not put in place and dragging out into the background colour when i put that in. sjkin has shadows planned. need to darken the shadows in places think i'm gonna put in some dioxazine violet into the purple bits along side some more ultramarine violet and maybe mix some brown into some purple for the really dark shadows. unsure yet, its a work in progress. anywho the shadows are at least planned so nto the skin :)

next up i have decided to learn how to use a brush pen to ink with. i think it may make my line art more inteeresting. i eventually plan on trying a brush and brown in but for now i'm getting used to the flow and whatnot.

to practice this pen i have done some sketches of screen shots from the movie how to train your dragon. i wanted to practice drawing and this seamed like a good idea at the time. maybe it will lead to a painting of how to train your dragon not from the movie who knows. anywho out the sketches so far this is the most complete

i will share the other 2 with you guys when there in sketch form. gonna print this and try inking it later.

i also need to get back to my mushroom glade painting. wiull hopefully have some more to show you by the end of the week :)

at work yesterday we where asked to dress up. this year i went as a zombie and actually managed to get pictures for it... i will have to take pictures of my other costumes sometime. anywho after 8 hours at where i work my make up wasnt perfect however i wanted to get a picture to show you guys. maybe someone at work managed to get a better picture of me... humm.

and i still have my badge on... fun times.

also the back of the skirt which i made myself. i was going to make a top and cut the pieces out for it i just was stupid and forgot to buy the ribbon thati needed to keep said top together... ah well it shall be part of my christmas costume and i think if i can get the blood out i will re use the skirt. and add stuff to it.

been a bit stuck with my mushroom glade painting, but hopefully will have gotten over that now. hopefully gonna paint add the colours for the faeries in next before i continue to add depth etc to the background.

quick ditital painting. may continue with this who knows, it was done to work some fustration at the mushroom glade painting

some background sketches. hopefully i will paint these. i dont know if you can actually tell what they are :D but this is how i start my backgrounds so we will see

and i've started my halloween costume for work. luckily the mock up is fitting right now :) which is good. found a sutible skirt patten to work from, still need to draft that but as long as i have a bases it makes it easyer. i need to by a old fashioned shirt and a rivit punch thing which i will buy when i go buy the proper fabric for this. i need to ask my boyfriend to get my sewing machine down and find the foor peddle >_> will look for that later. hoipefully will have a wearable mock up by the weekend :) go fabric shopping on monday and make the real thing tuesday and wednessday. hopefully i will have time to make a petticoat if not i will have to wear several skirts underneath for added poof. we shall see.

this is the top so far its gonna lace up down the sides. i will try and get pictures of me in the costume... sadly i'm camera shy so it may be difficult.

so its my sisters birthday soon, real soon and i'm kinda bad at keeping track of time. so i've only just started pulling reference, figuring out the picture and what not. while i would love to be finished by her birthday, i don't think its going to happen. obviously the time where i need time to work on my art works offering overtime and i'm too poor to say no.

anyway so far i've done a couple of sketches. the concept is faeries dancing in a fairy ring, forest in the background. its going to be fun and something she will hopefully love. my sister likes faeries, she doodles them all day (still trying to convince her that anyone can draw but not succeeding) i used http://mjranum-stock.deviantart.com/ to do these studies. but i think these are going to be my bases for the picture i'm doing. the costume is going to change. i drew this to capture the movement i want in the piece.

still working on this theres a few key bits i want to work on the path, the greenery and the bottom right cliff of the rock with the temple on it... and maybe the bridge, not fully sure on the bridge.

another update. so wanted to get this done today but the massive headache is preventing me from doing so. dammit. at least the rock in the corners done now. i'm now revisiting the rock with the temple on it. as well thats the main focas and needs to be built up more because of it.

the reason i was hoping to get it finished today is because i need to start a watercolour painting for my sisters birthday. faeries dancing in glad so far for it. she likes faeries and she wanted a fantasy painting done of her self so this is what i'm leaning towards right now. hopefully the tablets will kick in soon so i can work on my landscape. really dont want to have to set it aside to start my sisters birthday present. stupid mum saying i should give my sister a painting for her birthday. i only do it because my sister is my biggist fan and it would make her day. it doesnt help that i'm getting the urge to work on my dragon age comic again. anyway hopefully everything will work out.

watercolour landscape progress - part 2

this picture looks lighter then this in real life. my camera is not the best and so doesn't always capture images brilliantly. one day i will get a better camera, not only for photographing my art but for capturing good reference pictures.

the plan is to add more detail the further forwards this is so the illusion of distance is achieved. i plan to add more colour the further forwards the mountains get also. the next layer of mountains i'm introducing greenery and some sienna and umber, maybe a smidgen of orange once the rest of the layers bases have been built up i will probably re visit the back one and add a little more detail. but for now its important i don't over detail it.

watercolour landscape progress.

after a talk with a friend in a weekly art chat i visit, i decided to do an environment/landscape painting. environments or what people often dub as backgrounds don't get as much love in the places i visit. people seam to care more about characters more. so I'm painting a fantasy landscape or an environment if you want to call it that.

firstly i opened manga studio. i kinda use this for sketching and ideas. regardless of the fact this is planning for watercolour. as you can see its very loose something of which its going to retain. based on a piece of stock i found of some mountains on deviant art http://beefstock.deviantart.com/art/beefstockpic0035-29930422?q=&qo=, balianese temples from my photo album one of which i think is of tanah lot (its a temple surrounded by ocean very pretty), balanese palaces along with the memory of a plate i have in my verey bitty pots and pans that are in my mums garage.

next i printed the image out backwards. this is important as when i trece it ont tracing paperand then copy it to watercolour paper the image will be backwards to what i intend it. i clean up the sketch directly onto the tracing paper i also change the mountains in the forground.

next i mask of the building, the path and the litle wooden bridge. once the masking fluid is dry i wet the whole paper and attempt to do a graded wash wet on wet. i can do a graded wash when working wet on dry sadly there was too much water on the paper and the colours run :( i'm going to have to practice this some more. i lifted the clouds out before the paint dried using the tissue. some imperfections have been left behind but the cloud texture will be worked up eventually.

using more of the smale wash i pull the far mountains further forwards washing it over the clouds as i go and lifting most of it back out again. after letting that dry i work on the next mountain area. i repeat this adding more coboltblue to the mix the viridian green the further i get forwards. hopefully this sets the tone of the picture and creates a sense of distance in which i will be working on top of.

i aim to do ione of these everyday i dont always succesd but i have done quite well so far. sadly on saturday i used my last sketch card. to add to the annoyance when i went to the art store near me i found they didnt sell them... i'm really not enjouning having to cut my own. so tedious.

i'm thinking of doing an enviromental study. i like painting backdrops and with my latest pictures all i have been drawing is sky so i think i just want to do an environmental study. should be fun, i've already got a scribbly sketched out idea :)

time for another sketch book update. first up i was reading an how to draw hands tutorial over on da and was practicing. heres what i came up with so far. need to practice drawing hands more

next up really quick studies of poses most are done in 30 seconds

as you can see there very scribbly, because well thats how i sketch. sorry this ones so short, i have sketch cards to update and some fantasy/childrens book style drawings to update also.

the process of "the moon goddess"

so this is what i finished recently. i sketched this a while ago and are not sure if i put the sketch here or not. i proberbly did anyway here's the creation of this image from start to finish.

for this piece i started in manga studio. apparently this is an odd approch as i like sketching digitally. i feel it helps my compasition and its easyer to correct anatomy problems.

once i was happy with the sketch i printed it out onto cheep paper and lightboxed it onto a piece of A4 watercolour paper. i then tape the paper down using masking tape and then layer the wash of cerulean blue, turquoise, ultramarine prussian blue and purple lake. once done i speckled watered down acrylic onto the background using a tough brush to create the most distant stars. i masked some areas off making it easier to paint.

next i painted he cloths using pure purple lake and mixtures of purple lake and ultramarine

using paynes grey i did a light wash over the clouds. once the initial was was dry i used lemon yellow to put in the stars and there yellow glow. i waited for the paint to dry between each layer building the clouds up using paynes grey and the ultramarine/purple lake mixture. i paint her skin using a mixture of lemon yellow and cardium red and ultramarine and purple lake for the shadows. i rosey her cheeks with pure cardium red. i build up the skin until i'm happy.

i build up the clouds in the same way as before. darkening them until i'm happy. i paint her hair with really watery ultramarine.purple lake mixture, building it up in many layers. i also add some pure purple lake to her hair. i lift some paint to create hallos around her head and the stars, i also lift some of the paint of the clouds where the light would fall from her moonlight hair. using cardium yellow and cardium orange i finish the stars. i also add a hint of cadium yellow to her skirt. i darken the shadows on her dress using a mixture of purple lake and prussian blue, i also apply this mixture to the shadows of her skin. for the darkest shadows on her skin i add burnt umber finally i splatter white gauche onto the background blurring some of the stars edges in once dry to give them a hazy look.

i love books, its why i'm gonna need a new book case soon... well i could already do with one now since theres that books under my bed that i have no room for (there oversized and the oversized shelf is full) doesnt help i keep buying more XD

anyway recently i bought dreamscapes:creating magical angel, faery &mermaid worlds with watercolour, dreamscapes myth and magic: creating legendary creatures and charecters in watercolour and Avatar the last airbender: the art of the animated series. really glad i bought these books there fantastic. so lets look at them

i have several watercolour books, and often there very similar to each other. a list of techniques maybe teach you how to paint a hay bale and mostly landscape painting... useful but i want to illustrate so sometimes landscape painting isn't alaways helpful. john howes books did help me a lot however i still sometimes feel that i'm stumbling in the dark when it comes to painting white things, gold and other metals...and glowing effects also getting distance so there where plenty of things i still need to work on and if i hadnt read john howe i wouldn't have gotten into backgrounds, i love painting backgrounds there just as fun for me as painting the charecter, so i did take something away from it... i started useing washes because of them too... not that i did it brilliantly at first and i learned alot from trial and error. eventually i started creating pieces that where catching peoples attention... and all of a sudden everything started falling into place... which is awesome... and had stumbled across an artist called Stephanie pui mun law who had some tutorials that are very useful in her blog (i did a blog post about her here

http://wildhaggisis.blogspot.com/2010/02/im-going-to-talk-about-another-awesome.html) and well she had some tutorial books... for a while i debated if i should get them... and well decided to since i love her art work and even if there wernt as useful as i hoped they where they would make nice insperation books... lets just say they havent let me down so far...

i decided to read them in order of relese starting with creating magical angels, faery and mermaid worlds in watercolour. origanally i was skeptical because only 3 subjects seamed to be well limiting... but now the shere amount of detail she goes into is amazing. this books is good for those who are beginners, covering the very basic flat wash. graided wash, super imposing dry brushing and what not to the more advance salt, rubbing alcohol (or nail varnish remover in my case), cling film (plastic wrap) lifting paint and masking fluid. she goes int colour mixing making some briliant suggestions for skin tones, so you needent worry about not been able to buy skin tone paints. at the end of each chapter (except the first chapter as that ones about materials you will need) she brings eveerythng learned in the chapter and does a more complex piece tutorial.

my only complaint is the laytouts as i find it alittle annoying that the text isnt directly next to the corrasponding photo in most cases. with tutorials i prefer the text to wrasp around pictures so i can look from the tutorial picture to the text with ease.

dreamscapes myth and magic creating legendary creatures and characters in watercolour

the second watercolour book covers a more broad rage of subjects. it looks at 13 diffrent topics, for each one she touches upon painting different things. theres a very useful colour chart for painting diffrent skin tones in this one. she also talks about pattened fabric. the first chapter is almost exactly the same as her first tutorial book, but saying that it has to be for those who havent read the first. the layouts are still the same so theres still that issue, however this book is juat as informative as the first one, and i'm still learning new things from it which is good. not as many new things like the first book because many techniques you learn are repeated over and over again, but that strengthens the process. i especially find the different skin tone suggestions in this book to be very useful. hopefully i will branch away from my purple/alzain crimson mixed with lemon yellow or yellow ochre or raw sienna combo.

art books are something i like but find very expensive, so i dont have as many as i like. i have the art of the fellowship of the ring, tara mcphersons lonely hearts club, and uzamaki the art of naruto and the book that i'm about to talk about. taras been the only one that doesnt have text talking about the creation process (she has an interview in the back but thats it) and the naruto one not been as inciteful as it could have been (i was dissapointed buy the fact it didnt have any sketches and was mainly the covers of the manga) eventually i would love to buy some more art and art of books, there very insperational to me however if i have enough money to buy either an art book or a tutorial book the tutorial book usually wins.

thank god i had some birthday money to spend thats all i have to say... and i did get this from amazon so i saved some money there. i loved reading this book... it has writing throughout the book talking about the creation, and how it changed over time, thes glimpses at the storyboards, the key animation, the design work, the backgrounds, how the charecter design changed, the origanal concept and how that changed, press art and dvd covers... theres a lot of art. whats good about this book is it doesnt resort to captured screens from the show itself, the backgrounds are charecterless and you can wow over the sheer beauty of them without the charecters stealing the lime light, the facial expressions are often drawings are oftern as sketches to get a feel for the charecter, the scribbly cabbage guy yelling my cabbages is a good example of this, at the beginning of the book they kinda stated the animators have a whole 3 series singing their praises lets look at the artwork done before it even reaches the animation stage and thats exactly what it does. i would love to have seen more of the story boards. defently glad i got it, its going on the most flipped though for insperation shelf with john howe, tara mcpherson, imagine fx, and stephanie pui mun laws books.

ode to a rubber

it was a sad day yesterday when the remaining bit of my faithful once triangular rubber (eraser) disintegrated on me. it was about the size of a pea and a small one at that before it gave in, it will be missed and in it memory i dedicate these sketch cards to it... triangular rubber thanks for all the art.

lots of drawings to upload today :)

i've kinda been trying to do a sketch card everyday, its kinda working only missed 4 days so far but i have made up for that with the 5 cards in one day and 2 cards in another. hopefully i'll get better and better at it over time. been concentrating on faces and expressions because i need to get eyes level and improve my expression drawing. the first 4 where done before the commander shepard sketch card in the last post ( a month or two before actually) and the rest where drawn afterwards. slowly working through the 4 packs of sketch cards i bought... not sure where i'm gonna get more from once i run out... the art shop i got them from closed down. we shall see.

the first set are drawn from magazine picture, my imagination and stock photos on the internet. do not like the guy on the second row, his hair and mouth look weird.

the next two batches are avatar fanart well aang fan art since there all of him... cool show finally got round to seeing it on dvd (since i didnt have a tv when it was relesed) it was awsome... i know its a kids show but i've always had a soft spot for kids shows... i wish i had rthe kids channels on sky. but anyway these are drawn from the show, from memory and even useing a tutorial to understand facial expressions. copying can be useful occassionally but its best not to relay it on it as the only way of learning drawing. my favroite is is the worried looking one with hair, makes me think of the nightmeres and daydreams eposoid... no refs used for that one :)

been also thinking a lot recently about my old film making days. i think i could do story boarding. i enjoyed the story boarding module a lot and was regarded as quite talented at it by my tutors... shame my writing abilities let me down, the quality of my bored really wanted to make them mark me up for them but no... drawing skill is not one of the criteria. but anyway its something to think about. i'm going to do some mock storyboards and see whether its viable or not. people keep suggesting it also so its something to consider.

i dont do much fan art. generally i dislike it because i feel uncreative. i'm struggling to find the motivation to finnish my roselina picture due to this. blah i really should finnish it.

anyway i ended up drawing dragon age fan art... i actually have another piece started. quite a big project in the form of a fan comic... 4 chapters of it written so far one page drawn... needs text addig though and 15 pages planned outy so far... what i'm a big fan. besides it doesnt hurt to draw other peopes creations for practiceing fitting your drawings around a fixed brief.... thats my excuse and i'm sticking to it.

oh and i have 2 post cards sketched out ready for tweeking and inking

anyway so here we are my warden Neria and Alistair.

don't know if i mentioned but i'm doing some art course at the moment. the illustration ones sadly got cancelled but i'm enjoying the portrait and oil painting ones... i like oil paints a lot which is surprising. still cant stand acrylic though...and i love watercolours been doing watercolour portraits and there so fun and relaxing. maybe more watercolour in the future for you. i'll have to scan all my work for this course and show you guys. will probably do that at the end though ^^.

people may take my title to be a negitive thing accosiated with death, but i dont mean it that way sometimes when i paint i kinda go through this feeling of give me just 1 more hour and then i'll stop, it often feels like i never have enough time, especially with the multiple projects i have running at once.

i finished 1 of my 4 digital pics that i have on the go... i am very pleased with myself. i especially love the accordian, really glad i decided to colour this sketch :D

i'm hoping to dedicate 1 day a week to drawing from life, i need to get myself organised but its needed. i want to manage my time better. i'm going to plan everything on one of the free calenders my boyfriend got from work. only art related things are going on there. also i'm applying for a couple of illustration courses one is in children's illustration the other is fantasy illustration. i'm also considering taking a portrait drawing and painting class to to improve my drawing of faces. need to get moving and apply, but at least i've found some courses to take right :D theres a few that i was interested in but have been and gone hopefully they'll do them again next school year

winters lullaby is going to be the first picture for a calender, with my spring awakening, and my autumn gathering idea, its feeling pretty appropriate for a calender. i'm also going to start selling prints of my work soon, mainly because the imagine fx forumites club wants to do a catologue of everyone's prints and update it every month and advertise them, and been a sucker for group participation i'm defiantly considering it.

i'm going to talk about another awesome artist i recently descoved. i was at this shop called sacred space gifts buying a couple of oracle packs (which the artwork was lovely) and the owners who i have talked to before and are very friendly mentioned a Stephanie Pui-Min Law which she was waiting to buy her tarot deck as its not for sale but she had recently bought a book of hers. she even kindly wrote her name down for me so i could look her up. i'm glad i did.

her watercolours are beautiful. I've even already learned of a new technique to try out (throwing rubbing alcohol onto the page) obviously i have been useing watercolour for some time now, since i was 13 i belive and love water colour works by john howe and alen lee. it was nice to finally find another artist who works with watercolour i like.

i love the purple she uses, i went on the site she linked and by the sounds of it i can buy my own pigment and make my own paint, which is an interesting thought. i don't know if i have the space to make my own paint yet though.

on other note i have started colouring my winters lullaby picture. this is one huge eperiment for me as i'm using purple for the skin shadows. hopefully this once finished will give a night time feel to the picture. the photo has some what lost alot of the texture in her fur, hopefully when i scan it it will look better. though i might have to get a new scanner if i cant get the drivers working on the new pc.

and a sneaky peek at the videos i have been recording this one is of skin, and inst completed properly yet. it will need cleaning up that sought of thing, hence why its a sneaky peak.

so stay tuned for more videos on this piece though might take a week or so to finish recording and then theres the actual edit. but still i hope to get it up in the next couple of weeks :) gotta spring one forming in my head too, hopefully i can draw all the seasons or even do 12 related to each other and print my own calender to sell. we shall see.

man i have been busy with my next picture. its another traditional piece. i really need to get back to those digital pics but i cant resist my traditioanal mediums calling, there way to fun. i like digital too but i think i like traditional more, proberbly because i feel like i actually know what i'm doing with my traditional works. anyway it already has a title and is called winters lullaby heres a sneaky peak of one of the charecters in sketch form.

thats right fauns playing music theres 3 of them in total one singing, one playing the harp and one playing some weired double flute. hopefully its gonna be awsome. i'm recording it and making video tutorials for it. i think i should recorded it all first then edit it. i have edited most of the sketch to line art video together but so far i am not happy with it so its gonna need a re think. so i have decided to film all the colouring process then edit the thing together (in 10 min sections for youtube etc. of course... man i hate time limits so much sometimes. maybe i should use vimeo? i donno more poeople likely to see it on you tube.

next i'm going to talk about an artist i find inspirational called Michael Shapcott i clicked on his work because he was linking a video in his comments and me been me cant resist videos of art. and omg this was amazing. i have never wanted to paint so much in my life watching him paint made me want to paint. and i'm really looking forward to his next video.

i found it interesting that he uses a rag to wipe some of the paint off, he also in some of his pictures lets the paint run which creates an interesting look. i used this technique on my sanctuary picture for the ice and it worked really well. it was really messy but fun. i may play around with that technique again :D

hello again. two posts from me today how rare. i have another one in my head that i want to write about as well about an artist that i recently discovered and like, especially his painting videos. i find him very inspirational. i should right more about artists i like. its a good way to discuss influences and Art in general, its good to look at other peoples work and not get wrapped up in your own.

but more of that next time. i finished a piece today, added the highlights. i am very pleased with myself. I'm hoping to work on my organization more though. i did however work on this everyday till it was done, even though i did mess around on the Internet for to long at times. i need to work on my self control and my time planning.

this piece was created using drawing pens, alcohol based markers, watercolour paint, acrylic and white in on Bristol board. its title is sanctuary:- the endless in between. well it is for the moment. I'm not 100% on the title. i would like to become better at titling my pieces. shame I'm not good with my words :/ i have talked about this piece in other journals and will do my best not to repeat myself. i thought it would be nice to have all the process pictures in one place.

this piece has been quite trouble some. i messed up on the colouring of the first line art (can be seen here http://wildhaggisis.blogspot.com/2009/09/one-of-3-pieces-im-currently-working-on.html) and started again, didn't like the second one so i started again (as mentioned in this blog http://wildhaggisis.blogspot.com/2010/01/how-to-be-illustrator-and-late-new.html) so this is the third attempt. than there was the fact my masking fluid peeled all the marker work i did on the chains D:<

no just line art to show you guys, so strieght to the marker work, everything here except the chains is at the stage you'll see in the finnished picture.

i finished the marker work on the chain. and masked it off. i decided to go for purple based storm clouds because it was unnatural. i wanted it to be a glimpse into her psyche, the storm clouds being the tension that's been building up from the outside world and unnatural clouds seemed to be appropriate. i added Payne's grey (which i'm running out of), rose madder and Prussian blue to the mix to add volume. to the clouds splattering it onto the background at times. i then took my white ink and added the highlights to the clouds, washing it out to blend the colours better with the background.

here i took the masking fluid off which removed the chain work with it :( i went over the chains with white acrylic to define where the chains where so i could paint them easier later. next came the ice. i tried a new painting technique here. i made the paint exceptionally watery and painted it on an upright easel. most watercolourists paint there work flat due to the nature of watercolour. this technique however requires the surface to be tilted. i applied the watercolour in thin layers of blues an purples, i also added really watery acrylic to it which created an interesting look. as you paint you take a cloth and wipe some of the paint off, and keep repeating this process again and again till a number of light washes have been layered over the top of each other.

this technique lost a lot of the original line work, so i went in defined where the bottom layer of spikes where added shadows where they where i wanted parts to be darker and then started my drizzling technique again. i then when though the painting and added bright white highlights using acrylic paint straight from the tube as i wanted the texture of it at that point. here's a close up of the ice been worked on.

next i pained all the chain work. i mixed black and White with silver paint to create various shades of a metallic grey colour. after i applied it it was to metallic and reflected a lot of light and looked out of place. so i went through the painting with watered down white acrylic over the chains and wiped it off with a cloth so that enough paint was left behind to not affect the colours but to take away the shine. next time i think i will mix my greys instead of relaying on silver paint. once the painting was dry i removed the masking tape leaving a nice white outline around the picture.

so that's some of the process i went though with this picture. I'm hoping to update again tomorrow with an update about those inspirational vids i talked about. they really made me want to paint. but its getting late here so i should stop writing now.

i'm uploading some more of my sketches, well the last of them i should say, i am finally up to date. well i probably wont be for long. i first wanted to share my practice line drawings. i often sit down and just draw lines and shapes, its often not very interesting but i find its important for drawing. it makes a good warm up exercise, i find especially when i draw digitally i draw tons of lines and shapes before erasing everything and starting my sketches. i did save a couple of the digital ones (the first 2) drawing a straight line most people see as not important as they can whip out a ruler and ta daa a straight line however i find if you can draw a pretty straight line with confidence and without a ruler you can pretty much ink absolutely anything. i wasn't aloud to use a ruler in my product design class except for creating final designs... even in tests and the exam we didn't use them for quick designs and only when instructed. i guess from that class (and the fact my ruler was the most lost item of my pencil case) i never really used them since then. i will occasionally if i need a really straight line such as a boarder but other then that it stays in the back of my art draw.

okay more sketches now. the first is titled scary eyes, because well like my sister said she has scary eyes

now we have some weird helmet. i don't have a clue what was going through my mind when i scribbled it XD

a dude smoking. smoking kills kids, don't do it. i don't smoke by the way just thought the pose suited smoking...

a girl with a... i think it could either be a cocktail drink or a stuffed rabbit... i cant remember what it was, i'll let you guys come to your own decisions

woo a bin lid for a hat, i was thinking how fox girls etc. go about hiding there ears, it was at the time i started creating my masquerade character and at that time she isn't hiding her ears or face, while everyone else wheres a mask, and i was thinking how would she normally hide her ears? big hat like this works, though it could do with some hanging fabric and decoration.

yey sweetles and pretztails... i don't know what the otter type thing is but i was watching my boyfriend play viva pinata trouble in paradise as i was drawing. i love the paper texture and think rare are an awesome company :)

a person with glasses, i quite like her hairstyle. i also realise i need to do more really curly characters as i either draw straight or wavy haired people

very rare fan art. this is Marta and Emil from tales of symphonia dawn of the new world. i like this game, it was fun and i enjoyed it, it was a nice sequel, though why you couldn't play as anyone else other then Marta and Emil as player one i don't know. but Emil is really floaty which is fun so that wasn't to much of a problem. gotta play through it again and get the other endings still and go through the extra dungeon that unlocks after you complete your first play through.

really bad marker colouring practice, at the time i just didn't have enough markers, i have a lot more now but still filling in the gaps in my collection.

the dragon and the wolf. i plan of taking these pictures somewhere though i currently prefer the second picture for this. i like the wolfs sad face. think it would be awesome to show the cocky dragon and the lonely wolf in a dance of some sought. we shall see what comes of it.

i drew this on the bus i believe i had been reading about Japanese mythology at the time. though her design isn't very Japanese.

hyugoman chibi, he needs bigger boots. bigger boots are vital. my chibi's usually have tiny feet though.

this quote i thought very fitting title. i always feel very awkward sharing my sketch from my sketch book. my digital sketches are a lot more refined, probably because i want to practice drawing line art on the PC. my sister commented the other week when looking through my sketch book "its hard to believe that your ideas and sketches for a final piece start off looking like that," as flipped through my other sketch book (I'll update its drawings another day.) Believe it or not, i can actually draw defiantly sums it up. my sketch book doesn't show off my abilities much, probably because i rarely (there is a few cases here) spend more then 5 min's sketching a picture in it. and see it more as a gesture process quick character design, even ideas occasionally.

these are all gesture drawing. i tend to draw from photo reference books but don't get bogged down in details. i do this by setting a time limit on the drawing so that i concentrate more on the pose and gesture then every little detail, i don't like pencil much hence why there drawn in pencil crayon or pen most of the time.

these are ideas for possible characters, i was practicing character design for a few of them, there's an unfinished dragon, a fat super saiyan (my boyfriends words) , an old man, a girl holding a paper hot air balloon, a guy with steam pun goggles, and a girl who's hair style changes from picture to picture who also wears goggles and usually a hat.

i don't use a rubber so a lot of the original sketch lines are left from the initial sketch

my first commission

okay my first commission i did a while back for a friend. i'm hoping to do more in the future. obviously because it was my first commission i wanted to live up to the commissioners expectations which lead to a lot of sketches and research been done. the subject matter was his character from World of Warcraft a female Tauren. i had never drawn one before which made me nervous. the other day i was scanning all my sketches from my sketch book and came across a few pieces i did at the time for practice and planning. i thought it would be cool to post them up with the finished piece.

the first is one i did when i first was asked for a commission, this commission didn't have many guidelines which i'm very grateful for as it let me develop at the same time other then the drawing is of a tauren. i tried to draw the head of a tauren first to figure out if i could do this.

by the time i had finished drawing this picture i was fairly confident that i could draw a tauren with some practice and some references so i booted up Warcraft and made a female tauren in the same colours of bite, the character i was drawing and took some screen shots. i also noted down that she had green eyes as this was a characteristic that the commissioner had mentioned about his character.

i decided that i would draw a full body shot, because it was more true to my illustration this lead to me having to ask a few questions about what the commissioner wanted the character to wear. he decided on the brew fest dress and so i went with it. the brew fest dress in my eyes was a good choice because unlike the top raid armour sets that are contently replaced. holiday clothing tends to be used yearly. i myself play Warcraft and really like the brewfest dress though at the time i didn't have it.

after drawing these simple drawings i showed these to the commissioner as i wanted to see if there was any changes to be made. the major one that stood out was that her chin didn't look right and that her horns where white not black. so these changes where noted down to be made.

i drew a head shot of my character around the time as i wanted to practice digital art and wanted to practice drawing tauren. this was an couple of hours work in open canvas while i figure out pose and background.

i knew the commissioner's favorite place in Warcraft at the time was Nagrand as we were in the same guild. this lead to me actually picking a beautiful spot within the game to use as a background and lead to this rough sketch the large oval scribble is where the character would be placed.

from this sketch i drew the sketch and line art for the piece and began colouring. i kicked myself because i forgot to confirm the sketch for any changes that needed to be done.

one thing that came up was the nose area, in open canvas i sketched the changes that needed to be make and got them confirmed

i did my best to change the nose however the line art and the fact it had been coloured made this difficult. i learned something from it though and get the pencils confirmed before you ink and colour. shame i hate my pencil work so much. i finished up the background and made it look like she wasn't floating.

overall i was happy with the final image. and while i have received some criticism on this picture, i'm still very proud of the piece. i was especially pleased with how successful my foreshortening turned out since i hadn't used it before.

obviously i have realised that i did to much prep work for it which i wouldn't normally do and realise i need to be more confident in my abilities, that and draw other things but humans. which i'm planning to start doing this year.

how to be an illustrator and late new years resolutions

so the busy period of overtime getting in the way of my art should have come to an end. now I'm back to my lovely 7 and a half hours a week. ah well at least i can work on my art. I've got 7 days holiday to take which practically works out at 3 and a half weeks by march. this is what happens when you live in a timeless world XD. more time to work on my art (though i must get a holiday form as they where out of them last time) and been paid for some of it too, that's good.

so its an other year i looked at how much art i produced last year and finished piece wise it was disappointing, sketch wise it was okay, mainly because i still haven't got all my sketches scanned and posted. i need a more convenient to get to scanner.

I'm currently working on this picture

its the chains one from before only changed a lot, i messed up on the colouring and re sketching it the exact same wasn't feeling right for me, even light boxing it (in the form of taping it to a window) wasn't working out, so i went back to the original idea of designing a character for my illustrated book and took it from there. I'm hoping to have it done by the end of Tuesday, its going quite well, pity i have been so distracted today. i have decided to create at least 4 finished pieces a month (aiming for 2 in January due to not making decisions fast enough) starting with the 5 pieces i have yet to finish. hopefully everything will go to plan. people say I'm to hard on myself at times. i should get one of those schedule wipe boards.

recently i have been having problems getting on the PC that can run my art programs, been kicked off a few times which has been a bit of a downer, luckily where getting a second study put in (not for me but for my boyfriends mum) and hopefully me and my boyfriend are going to invest in a new PC soon with our Christmas money (the old one is going to be stored in the wardrobe as we will probably need it when we get our own place). i'm also debating of getting my current art table stored and using my fold away easel to draw with due to space issues in my room and getting a new bookcase/ stealing my old one back.

i have invested in a couple of books to try and push my art forwards.

the first is the artists' yearbook 2010/2011

"the artists' yearbook is the only comprehensive up to date reference guide to getting ahead in today's art world. offering advice and inspiration in one fact packed volume, it features carefully vetted information on and contact details for more than 3,000 visual art businesses and organizations"

its mainly based around the UK with a few sections listing things world wide. some of the articals where interesting, though overall its more a yellow pages for artists with a brief description about what everything is and does. the fairs where disappointing, not because of the book per say but by the fact you have to represented by a gallery from what i can see. gonna read that section properly soon. but the competitions are a possibility.

And omg this book is fantastic. this isn't the book i mentioned with my picture of all my art books (which grows constantly i might add) that one was about children's illustration and i found it very vague with only one chapter of i believe 12 pages about getting published. it was good for things such as the notion of making dummy's etc. but was a bit to general in my opinion. this one however is fantastic. its geared more towards the business side of things. i actually came away thinking to myself wow i think i know enough to get started now which is a good feeling, I'm a bit more confident at what i need to do and how i need to go about it to get a job. the portfolio comes first. which I'm gonna work so hard to make this year. the artwork first obviously, and then the whole portfolio design. I'm not going for the over sized portfolio i think a small art book would be better as its easier to look at (and the art director who wrote the forward seemed to prefer this) it made me think about studio space, weather it ideally would be at home or a rented out studio, whether i need an agent or not etc. it talked about contracts, how to write an invoice and keep track of them. i found it a book worth buying

i also thought I'd chime in with some useful links i have found over the years.

the first is a useful blog i found ages ago called the art of business http://www.artofbusinessblog.com/ I'm not the best business woman but this blog which sadly is updated very infrequently has some really helpful hints and tips from separate bank accounts to keeping track of your finances every month etc.

the second is a artist alley guide for cons (obviously) by telophase (http://telophase.deviantart.com/) that can be found here http://www.projectbluerose.com/tutorials/anime-convention-artist-alley-survival-guide/, its very easy to understand and separated well. though it does assume that you know where some cons are (which at the time other then one of the ones in London i didn't know of any which was frustrating) but some research should solve that (http://www.cosplay.com/calendar/ has a list of conventions, not all of them as often the little cons are ignored but its a good place to start) while it is aimed at anime conventions I'm sure that the information can be applied to other conventions and arts and craft fairs.

hopefully these links and books will be interesting or useful for those interested in illustration and art.

so I've finally made my first recording of my art. i think i'm going to do more of these, even though they do take a while to save. i used a photo of a friend Kerrin Tatman who i have known since way back, I've like known him since he was 5 (i will have been 8) and he stole my sausage roll... which i really don't get because hes vegetarian. he's a very talented musician and belongs to no soup productions. "Here at No Soup we are passionate about live music, creative costumes, physical theatre and original writing. time to share my sketches again. my sis got me thinking of how i said i'd draw a picture for her in manga style, i'm still in the design process but so far i have come up with this, i think the nose needs tweaking a alot and could look more like her... work on chin and nose me thinks. i'll leave it till tomorrow and see what i think.

i also drew a reoccurring character of mine, i use her to represent myself on the internet, she is my avatar here and on deviant art, i'm planning to change my other avatars on other websites to her also.

i'm annoyed with myself artistically at the moment, while i knew i wouldn't finish the witches moon picture on time, i'm annoyed that i tend to mess around on the internet, if i didn't mess around so much i think it would be at a stage where i could enter the competition. next time i'm gonna work harder, but for now, i'm going to sketch more and finish the three pictures i have already started.

art, halloween and stuffs

so i've done some research, apparently i cant get another student loan according to some peoples and websites so uni is definatly off the table. i talked to someone art work who's doing an art and history course and says for fine art its not worth it anyway, might as well hire a studio and paint constantly it would be cheaper too. oh well i shall continue to produce art work out of some bedroom in a small town called Mansfield, reading imagine fx (one of the best art magazines on the planet i might add) and doing my best to get feedback off the Internet.

studying film and tv production is turning out to be the biggest mistake in my life and i'm feeling out of my depth at times. its like i'm trying to keep up with amazing artists but are drowning and getting further away. i feel like i'm not improving fast enough and its such a scary thought. i feel so far behind. people tell me i've improve with every picture i do but i don't feel like i do, i guess i'm concentrating on everyone been better then me rather my improvements. you'd think having my work in an art gallery at the age of 14 would have been an ego boast but i guess until i find my confidence which comes and goes, its not going to happen.

so the witches moon compition, it goes not so well got a week to go and i don't think i'm going to complete it, and of course it been my annual halloween picture that's not going to happen either at this rate. blagh. still gonna finish it even if i dont make the date on time. i need to stop pissing around on the Internet when i'm suppose to be doing digital art, i know i piss around because i think i'm crap but i'm not gonna improve if i dont get my head into gear.

so i'm gonna share with you my unfinished digital art today. .. all of which will get completed.

in other news work is going well. i have to make a costume to wear for halloween for it though. well i dont have to make but i'd rather make a costume, i like making things, you really feel like you have accomplished something when you do ^^. i'm gonna go as a cat. i'll post some pictures of it online :) gonna have to buy a patten or two, fabric, zips etc. i already have the foam, hair clips and fake fur which i'm gonna make the ears out of... no head band for me XD want a couple of giant bells but cant find any so far, maybe i should use a gold bauble and make it look like a bell. i can always take my little bells off my bag and attach them other places so i make the jingling sound. hummm i really should start that sooner then later... but fabric shops wont be open today... sigh. are well best get the planning and make the ear, tail and coller (except the bell) today. gonna go for a black and orange theme me thinks. i like dressing up to much and i put way to much effort into it. besides i need a costume for my boyfriends works Christmas party... just have to recycle it then XD.

the art plan

last time was all about going to uni. i've decided to make a good portfolio and take it from there. i dont want to apply too early as i need to finnish a few pieces to show them but art has suddenly become a whole lot more important.

i know my masquerade picture is definetly going in once its finished because its my best damn picture i have done so far. i'm gonna do some natural media pictures too mainly water colours and marker pictures i think. do some life drawing (i should look up classes near me or get a life drawing book) and work on a proper manageable sized sketch book... A3 is a bit big for a sketch book.

on another note i'm entering one of the imagine FX's challengeshttp://community.imaginefx.com/forums/thread/245498.aspx the topic is witches moon and i'm going for a scifi witches on a moon picture. it should be fun and i want to take witches away from the traditional idea of witches. heres the first WIP, planning of chopping the edges off and adjusting there height. but its a good start and i'm feeling confident about it. gotta finnish it by midnight on the 31st of october hopefully i'll make it! wish me luck.

need to do some organising, i'm trying to do to many projects at once and its not very productive - 3 digital pieces, 2 traditional, a tutorial and a compleate illustrated book (which i wrote too) and a handmade book is compleatly bonkous to try and do at once. so need to make a plan everything a bit more and stick too it.

i'm in such a meh mood today, proberbly because i never feel like i have time to paint when i have work. oh well hopefully i'll pass through it after work.

decorating the room is getting there, the wardrobe has been fitted which is good, just got to do some touch ups and paint the picture rail and skirting board then thats done :D and finnaly will have rid of the disgusting curtains woo! i also have art draws now :) i'm thinking of claiming another one to store my actual art in.

i should go plan my art out... i should get a diary/planner for next year it would make things easier.

the debate

i have been to university and have a degree in film and television production, a degree in which i ended up not enjoying in he end and regretting the fact that i didn't do an fine art degree. for at least 6 months i have been debating going back to university to study a fine art degree. I'm constantly coming back to the idea of going back to university. but the eternal debate keeps raging

because i already have a degree i obviously have a student loan to pay back, to do another degree would create more debt especially since they changed the you don't get your tuition paid for you anymore if your parent don't earn enough rule and now i would have to get a tuition fees loan as well as a maintenance loan. this obviously would create more debt with the student loans company and while i don't start paying it back until i earn a certain amount a year i worry about never paying them back.

at the same time i don't want to be left thinking what if i did do an art course would i become better than i am now, or even if i wasn't to do one would i regret not doing it when i had the opportunity. currently i have a job with low hours, i don't have a mortgage and i don't have any children to support. I've considered going to uni again at a later date but then again if i have other commitments would this be possible or would i decide not to because its too much of a risk.

if money wasn't involved I'd have said where do i sign by now but it is and its something that i need to take into consideration. hopefully over the next week i will find answers and make the decision.

on an other note I have had to place my markers down and put my tablet away for the weekend and probably wont pick them up again for a couple of weeks. over the weekend i need to empty out our room except for the bed and redecorate before the wardrobe men arrive next Tuesday(yey wardrobes) I'm looking to also getting a new curtains and maybe a new quilt covers (I've seen one i like where i work) as I'm fed up of the mismatched look we currently have going on.

hopefully i'll be back creating art sooner than i thought i would.

old sketches

i recently started a new sketchbook and decided to put my old sketches up here. hopefully i'll do better at updating the new sketch book unlike this one which has a lot of old work in it.

this is my oldest work, spanning from 14 till around 21. while its not all the work i have done in those 6 years it is the work i currently have access to. i am tempted to go rescue my triptych and other works that my art classes from high school didn't loose or the work my mother hasn't thrown away. some of it hasn't been seen even on deviant art and i think it would be good to compare my work from than and now in order to see my progress.

all of these pictures are published on my DA account http://wildhaggisis.deviantart.com/ my scraps section. if you want to take a closer look at them feel free. i didn't want to concentrate too much on them due to how old some are. however there part of my sketch book (whether they have been drawn on other paper and placed in the sketch book for safe keeping or drawn directly in the sketch book)

the next picture is a character sketch for my Elfin Lied picture which was done as a request. Sadly i was unable to contact the person who asked for this picture and it still remains in my care. I don't if it but often draw fan art, and when i do i usually have to really like the series. while elfin lied is a good anime its by no means my favorite. at the time of buying this anime i was in the lets watch all anime stage and often buying a lot of series because they where on sale some of which i love, some of which i like enough to watch on rare occassions and some of which i hate. elfin lied fell in the category i liked it enough to watch again but not enough to go out of my way to. i think the fact i wasn't really passionate about the anime effected the overall piece and it could have been a lot better.

this sketch was then copied on to marker paper and after several ugly backgrounds in which didn't work i finally finished the image and settled for this. usually i don't plan my images however i ended up drawing in my sketch book this image which was suitable for what i wanted and because it was on the wrong type of paper for my markers i had to re sketch it onto other paper.

the next picture was started at a similar time to the elfin lied one but i finished this one a lot faster. every Halloween i try to draw a picture... often i fail due to at the time been at university at the time and not completing projects. this was done Halloween 2008. this is a lot of peoples favorite piece. apparently cute chibi's are well cute :D here's a quick process of the sketch to the final image. sadly i dint get any pictures of the actual colouring process, but you can clearly see my thought process and changes made from start till finish

the background was planned separately due to not having enough room and wanting to build up as you can see the sketch fence didn't make the final picture. i often find that its best to edit pictures as they go along as while somethings wok when planning, they don't work for the overall final picture.

colouring this was intersting. i used markers, watercolour and white ink for this one. i felt pretty experimental with the stars due to not all of them came out the same and because the watercolour was dam in some places some bled a little creating a brilliantly hazy effect round there edges.

my main disappointment with this picture now that i look back at it is the lack of shadow under the hat and cast on the pumpkin. and think if i was to do it again that the shadow needs addressing. however overall this remains still one of my favorite pieces of art. i want to do some more chibi stuff in the future. there fun to draw and if i was ever to illustrate a children's book this would probably be the style I'd use.

Space

Every artist has a space in which they create art. Some have massive studios others tiny spaces within there home which they dedicate to there art. I currently live out a bedroom in some small town in England and while I would prefer a room in which to dedicate as my drawing space sadly this isn't currently available to me. Hopefully in the future I can have my own studio :)

For now my studio space is a small fold out table that is next to the bed.

It folds out again to be bigger then that if I need it, however because of the seam I would have to buy a piece of wood to sit on the table so that the seams of the table don't show on my work. For now I have to make do with what I have. Please excuse the horrible curtains. Its not my house and I'm currently with my boyfriend paying board for the spare room. Pity it has awful curtains.

This is only some of my art materials. Because I use my markers a lot I don't put them away, unlike my acrylics and watercolours. On my desk at the moment I have several pads of Bristol board which is my favorite paper out there for markers, my sketch book, my scratch book (warm up book that's full if lines circles etc.), a shoe box which has my pencils drawing pens rubbers etc. in, boxes are good for organisation, my list of things to do book, which I document all the projects I'm working on and how much work still needs doing for each of them (that's the black one with a fairy on the cover). There's also a couple of photo references books which are useful from time to time, two boxes of markers (one for my kurecolour ones and one for my promarkers) my trusty colour wheel and a glass of water for my paint brushes.

You can also see my latest line art Chains (working title) on the table. I haven't started colouring it yet as I'm waiting on an order of markers and even then it all depends on whether the blues I've ordered are light enough to when I can start colouring it.

I also keep things such as my glasses, my watch and a box of tissues on my desk. While there not art related I keep my glasses and my watch there so I can find them easily in the morning, and well tissues... they come in useful for when I have a cold or need to take some of the water off my brushes so no art studio should be without them :D

this table is also used to set up my laptop and tablet on from time to time. my laptop is used mainly for collecting reference photos and often i use it to print a reference out and look for references and obviously look at tutorials and artists work i like. when it comes to digital art however i use the more powerful PC down stairs due to its nice big screen.

I have learned to utilise the space I have available. With a simple board that has been supported by the legs of the table I have more room to keep things. Here i keep my printer which I use to print off references sometimes, and writing for my art work. There's also all my Imagine FX magazines stored in box's here, a messy pile of manga and a book on illustration.

Most of my books whether they be art related or not are stored under the bed along with my DVD's, hopefully when the new wardrobes get fitted a lot of these will move some of these (especially the DVD's) onto shelves

My other materials such as paintbrushes, other types of paper, watercolours acrylics etc. are in boxes put away in the built in cupboard which is going to be replaced with a built in full wall wardrobe soon... finally been able to hang up my clothes is going to be awesome.

These are all the art books and magazines that I currently own except for one book on illustration ( I recently got that one). A few of which because i don't use them I'm thinking of selling along with my film books.

I think its important to read books not only on technique but other artists and art theory to gain an in site into the art world. Though I would recommend reading them from the local library over buying them as some art books can be expensive.

Anywho that's a look at my space which I create art, its nothing fancy but its where I work from for now.

Tara McPherson and practicing colouring

There's this artist I really like, in fact I think shes on her way to becoming my favorite. I only found the artist Tara McPherson http://www.taramcpherson.com/art/around a week ago after reading this months copy of Imagine FX and fell in love with her work instantly. I love her colours and images, usually with nude drawings I feel very uncomfortable, maybe because the female characters seem rather weak to me and vulnerable... and in some cases sex objects (especially nudes on deviant art). But in McPherson's work this isn't the case. when looking at her characters I always get the impression that there strong, there's an innocence about them and the sense that there completely comfortable.

One of my favorite images by her is her Weight of Water Part Three

I would highly recommend looking at her work. She has inspired me a lot and i hope to create better art because of her work. I have been unhappy with my images recently, I've tried moving more to realism over what most call Aime however I'm still not satisfied with it. I think its because I need to work on my style more and add a lot more emotion and story to my pictures rather than falling back on over used themes. Its nice when you finally figure out whats missing from your art work. Its really inspiring.

While reading McPherson's blog I found this video. I find it fascinating to watch other people paint. I think it gives a brilliant in site on how an artist creates and especially helps those still learning. What I like more about this video though is the fact shes painting the walls of a gallery. There is a much more friendly atmosphere because of it. Its also links everything together with a definite feeling this is McPherson's gallery showing.

While reading her blog I stumbled across this http://www.darkhorse.com/Features/Games/983/Tara-McPherson-Coloring-Book which I thought was kinda cool. While it was suppose to be done online I was having problems with lag due to my laptop having issues of over heating etc. so I decided to print it and colour it with markers for colouring practice.

It was a lot of fun to do, especially since how much I love McPherson's work. Its nice once in a while to colour someone else's work as it lets you think solely about colour rather than fixing mistakes you have made in your work etc. I want to colour more line art because of this.

Anyway that's all for now. I will probably do another update later with my sketches.

i was suppose to be working on the layout of my illustrated book (working title:- Entrapment) and i ended up doing this little sketch

i liked it so much that i decided to take this sketch to a finnished image. sofar i have resketched it and inked it. over the next week or so i'm going to colour it, well once i order some more markers to colour it with, need more light blues for this one.

Getting this show on the road

Time for me to have a blog I thought to myself the other week.

Deciding on what it was going to be about was easy, deciding on a title was even easier. Ode to Crayola is not only a fantastic song by lemon demon, but sums up where my drawing started out... I like many other artists, and the general public for that matter, started out drawing and colouring with crayola wax crayons. Getting this blog started, well that's a different thing all together.

i would like to introduce myself, my name is Cherie Bryant though most people know me on the Internet as wildhaggisis. I like myths so the mystical beasty wild haggis seamed like a good name to go by. I am currently working out of a bedroom in Mansfield, England in order to strengthen my illustration portfolio and my art career. Hopefully in the next year I will start going places.

My interest in art started at the age of 11 or 12 and while my work has been displayed in an art gallery in hull at the age of 15 it wasn't until I was 18 that I began to see art as a viable profession to go into. At the time I was studying film and looking at being a production design, though soon realised that it wasn't for me and my drawing talents lied else where. My work is often described as Disney or anime, it has even been described as low brow or pop surrealism. Pop surrealists take influences from popular culture and mix them with fine art theory and technique. This sums up my approach to art very well and I hope to push the boundaries further in the next few years so that I create a style unique and interesting.

This blog aims to keep up to date with my sketches, wips and various conventions and shows that I go to in the future. Hopefully showing insight into the way I work and what its like as a fledgling illustrator trying to break into the industry. I hope this blog is interesting to read and look forward to your comments.
